पुष्पेषु चम्पा नगरीषु लङ्का, नदीषु गङ्गा नृवरेषु रामः ।

नारीषु रम्भा पुरुषेषु विष्णुः, काव्येषु माघः कवि कालिदासः ॥

Kavyas of Māgha are as pre-eminent as
Campaka among flowers, Lanka among cities,
Ganga among rives, Rama among Kings
Rambha among women and Vishnu among the men!

Such a poet was celebrated by The Kuppuswami Sastri Research Institute (KSRI), in collaboration with The Samskrita Academy, Madras, through Other Poets’ Day, dedicated to the mahākavi Māgha. The event was sponsored by the Smt. Rajam Ramaswamy Endowment and the Smt. Balambal Memorial Endowment.

The programme featured a lecture by Smt. V. Lalitha(Dr. S.S. Janaki Chair, KSRI) on:

“The Elegance and Novelty of Māgha”

Using select verses from the Śiśupālavadha, the speaker highlighted Māgha’s remarkable intellect, linguistic mastery, and poetic artistry. Classical tradition recognises Māgha as the poet of triple excellence:

उपमा कालिदासस्य भारवेरर्थगौरवम् ।
दण्डिनः पदलालित्यं माघे सन्ति त्रयो गुणाः ॥

Kalidāsa’s similes, Bhāravi’s depth of meaning, and Daṇḍin’s elegance of expression — all three are found in Māgha.

The lecture concluded with Mallinātha’s benedictory reflection on Māgha’s poetry:

धन्यो माघकविर्वयं तु कृतिनस्तत्सूक्ति संसेवनात् ।

Blessed is the poet Māgha — and blessed are those who engage with his words.
