The Kuppuswami Sastri Research Institute was established in 1945 as a fitting tribute to the great scholar Mahamahopadhyaya, Darsana Kalanidhi, Vidyavacaspati, Prof. S. Kuppuswami Sastri, who combined in himself the rare combination of depth of traditional scholarship and modern research acumen. Many great stalwarts and statesmen like Dr. Sir. S. Radhakrishnan (Former President of India), Rt. Hon'ble V.S.Srinivasa Sastri, Padmabhushan Sir K.Balasubrahmanya Iyer, Padmabhushan Dr.V.Raghavan, Dr.S.S.Janaki and scores of other eminent men of letters have adorned different positions to raise this Institute to become an internationally reputed organization in the field of Sanskrit and Indology.
Genesis of Kuppuswami Sastri Research Institute
Professor S. Kuppuswami Sastri, had, during his lifetime, not only revived the interest in Sanskrit studies, but also patterned a structured pedagogy system to ensure that there is no compromise in the scope and quality of education in Sanskrit and its literature. The admirers, connoisseurs and students of the Professor, who were prominent statesmen in erstwhile Madras Presidency, desired to create a 'Centre of excellence' to perpetuate the memory of the great Savant with a Vision to 'preserve the knowledge of Sanskrit and related Indology by establishing, institutionalizing, creating perpetuity and consolidation' and 'to achieve this mission by being a competent Centre for actively pursuing, promoting and facilitating Original Research, Propagation, Publication and Modern Communication, Scholar's Gateway, Library and collection of precious manuscripts, Teaching and Doctorate Programme, Support and Affiliations to renowned Universities'. Accordingly, 'The Kuppuswami Sastri Research Institute' was founded in March, 1944 by Scholar-friends, students and admirers of Professor Kuppuswami Sastri under the Chairmanship of Dr. A. Lakshmanaswami Mudaliar, the then Vice-Chancellor of the University of Madras.
THE KUPPUSWAMI SASTRI RESEARCH INSTITUTE (KSRI) was formally inaugurated on 22nd April 1945 by Sri S.V. Ramamurthy, I.C.S., Advisor to the Governor of Madras Presidency. Renowned personalities like Rt. Hon'ble V.S. Srinivasa Sastriar, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan (former President of India), Sir C.P. Ramaswamy Iyer, Padma Bhushan Sri K. Balasubramania Iyer, Professor M. Hiriyanna, Sri. S. Sathyamurthy, Dr. C. Kunhan Raja, Dr.A.Lakshmanaswami Mudaliar and Sri S. Vaiyapuri Pillai were actively associated with the Institute as Presidents, Secretaries and members. Padma Bhushan Dr. V. Raghavan, Sanskrit Scholar of international repute, was the Founder Secretary and mainstay of the Institute.
The Institute is aptly situated inside the Sanskrit College premises in Mylapore where Prof. Kuppuswami Sastri served as the first Principal. This has been blessed by the visits of great saints, statesmen and scholars like Kanchi Paramacharya and the Pontiffs of Kamakoti Mutt, Madhva mutts, Vaishnava mutts, Swami Dayananda Swamiji and others, Mahatma Gandhi, Father of our nation, the National poet, Rabindranath Tagore, Pandit M adan Mohan Malavia, Rajaji, Rt.Hon'ble Srinivasa Iyer, Dr.Rajendra Prasad, Dr.S.Radhakrishnan, Sri R.Venkatarman ( former Presidents of India), Governors of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Chief Justices of India, and many foreign dignitaries.
KSRI Overview
KSRI is a Registered Society, voluntary, public and a non-profit Organisation functioning within the hallowed precincts of the reputed Sanskrit College Campus in tradition-bound Mylapore area in Chennai (formerly Madras). Ever since its inception in 1945, KSRI had been a renowned Institution offering expertise and professional assistance to preserve Sanskrit and related Indology research in a holistic way, i.e., by establishing, institutionalizing, propagating, consolidating and creating perpetuity of the great Sanskrit heritage and promoting the knowledge of Sanskrit and related Indology research. A reputed line of eminent Sanskrit and Indological scholars had ornamented the Institution in various capacities. The selfless services rendered by them at the helm ensured that the Institution remains widely acclaimed and reputed both within India and Abroad.
KSRI is well known in its area of operations in India and around the world. KSRI has associations with the renowned University of Madras and many other Indian and international academic institutions. KSRI is an enabler of research for Indian and foreign scholars in their Doctorate pursuits.
